There’s more to Aldeburgh Cinema than meets the eye. Situated on the bustling High Street, it looks rather too small to be a cinema. Venture within, however, and it’s like a tardis, with seating for up to 253 people. This is actually less than the original capacity of over 280, following work to create more leg room! Serving the community, this independent picture house has been screening films for nearly a century. Threatened with closure in the 1960s, a group of locals, including Benjamin Britten, clubbed together to buy it and then run it themselves.
The Aldeburgh Documentary Film Festival is the brainchild of Molly Dineen, a BAFTA and Royal Television Society award-winning UK television documentary director, cinematographer and producer, who set this festival up 16 years ago with the writer Craig Brown. Since that time, it has lured film producers and directors to Aldeburgh to present their work.
Aldeburgh DocFest marks its 17th annual celebration of documentary film with its biggest and most ambitious programme yet. This year’s festival will provide a showcase for the latest documentary films and bring international, award-winning film-makers to Aldeburgh to talk about their work in audience Q&A sessions. Giving added glamour, on Saturday evening, this event features a full screening of the feature length observational documentary, Mrs Carey's Concert, followed by a Q&A with co-director Sophie Raymond, who will fly in from Australia where it is the second highest grossing documentary in box office history.
The Brudenell Hotel is a short walk from the cinema and is offering a two-night all inclusive package for two people priced from £270, which includes:-
• Two nights’ bed and breakfast for two people sharing a twin/double room on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th November
• A rover ticket which allows two people entry to all five DocFest sessions taking place at Aldeburgh Cinema
If you would like to book a room on this package, call our reception team on 01728 452071.

Kipper lovers who find themselves in Suffolk on the 22nd and 23rd October should not miss the second Suffolk Herring Festival. This celebration of the silver darlings reflects the tradition of Suffolk farmers going to sea after harvest to catch the herring that swim past in great shoals in October and November.
Suffolk has a long-established association with the fishing of herring. However, there is little demand now for this wonderfully flavoursome fish. The Suffolk Herring Festival plays a fundamental role in promoting the health benefits of eating the local herring, as well as raising awareness of the way in which the herring fisheries can contribute to the development of the local economy and employment.
This fun weekend will include fantastic food, beer, singing, demonstrations by local chefs on how to fillet and cook these sustainable and nutritious fish and much more.
Here at the Brudenell, we will be celebrating the Suffolk Herring Weekend with a delicious themed menu:-
Suffolk Herring Weekend Menu 2011Roll mop with smoked bacon and potato salad with watercress and lemon
Salt cured herring with fennel, orange and dill salad
***
Grilled herring on tomato, preserved lemon and black olive brochette with basil oil
Baked herring stuffed with apple and oats, watercress and sautéed potato salad
We look forward to welcoming you.

Here at the Brudenell, we are now bottling water to save lives by supporting our sponsored charity, East Anglian Air Ambulance. We have recently installed a new system called Vivreau, which allows us to filter tap water and produce pure still and sparkling bottled water.
Why have we installed water purification in the hotel? Well, it offers our guests a choice and it’s a compromise between more expensive mineral water and tap water.
It also supports our ‘Green credentials’ by:-
- Reducing our carbon footprint by eliminating the need to produce, package and transport bottled mineral water
- Significantly reducing our glass and plastic packaging waste/ recycling costs
- Supporting the fact that mineral water is considered by many as ‘morally unacceptable’
For every bottle or still or sparkling water purchased in the restaurant (£1.00 for 750ml) we will donate 30p to East Anglian Air Ambulance.
Next time you stay with us, why not try some and help us to help EAAA save lives!

August, 4th 2011 We love cocktails at the Brudenell Hotel. They can be sweet, sour, strong, mild, colourful, fun, healthy, non-alcoholic and they are served all over the world. Millions of people just in the UK enjoy a cocktail every day! The origin of the word ‘cocktail’ is not known. They say that the earliest known printed use of ‘cocktail’ is said to be in The Farmer's Cabinet on April 28, 1803.
Here on the Suffolk coast we want to keep the tradition of cocktails alive. Our favourite ones are martinis. It is something about martinis that screams sophistication and seduction. Imaging yourself sitting by the bar and relaxing with a gorgeous glass of martini. What could possibly be better? Perhaps staying in with your closest? If yes, then learn how to make them in your own kitchen… Here are 3 videos that will guide you on how to make the most delicious martinis and impress all of your friends and family this weekend…

July, 15th 2011What could be better than sitting on a sunny terrace overlooking the beach and drinking a glass of chilled Rosé? Yes, we know – mouth-watering nibbles! We are so pleased to announce that we have launched our first tapas menu… it is perfect for lazy sunny afternoons...
The word "tapas" comes from Spain and the Spanish verb tapar, which means “to cover” – probably “to cover” the table with a wide variety of appetisers or snacks. Tapas may be cold or warm and in some bars in Spain, as well as in some other parts of Europe and United Kingdom, tapas has evolved into a stylish cuisine where customers are ordering many different tapas and combining them to make a full meal. Tapas has evolved through the history by incorporating ingredients and influences from many different cultures and countries. In the early days tapas were just slices of bread or meat which sherry drinkers nibbled in between their glasses. In today’s bars you can find all kinds of tapas. At the Brudenell we do hope that you will find all of your favourites... So, what do you think of lovely olives with fresh bread and balsamic oil; humous, mahamura and lebneh; a beautiful selection of cured meats; sauteed chorizo glazed with fino sherry; hot gambas; deep fried salt and chilli squid; salt cod fritters with aioli; Harrissa-spiced chickpea & vegetable stew? Sound amazing? Come down to the Brudenell this summer and relax on our gorgeous terrace in the sun which is just a pebble’s throw from the beach in Aldebrugh. See you soon!

June, 24th 2011What could be more exciting than cruising on a luxurious yacht with a glass of superb bubbly?
Spending your summer days away sailing is probably the most vibrant and relaxing experience you can imagine. To just grab a boat yourself and start sailing can be quite tricky though, as it is a learning process where you have to understand how to navigate, keep control and maintain the boat. Working together with
Viking Mariners in Ipswich Suffolk we are able to give an amazing sailing experience where you can just sit back and relax whilst skipper and hostess take care of you… or you are more than welcome to have a go. So, why not become a part of the crew with these fantastic sailing experience days?
This summer is all about spoiling yourself! So, don’t forget to explore the incredible River Orwell and the coastal town of Aldeburgh. Book your sailing break today and discover the stunning Suffolk coast. Check out our
special interest breaks offers… Ahoy!

May, 26th 2011Firstly, we would like to give a warm welcome to, Francis Moore that has accepted the challenging position as a Head Chef at the Brudenell Hotel. Previously working in top-class restaurants and hotels across the UK he has gained a lot of experience in the culinary industry. It has been a long journey so far… from “chefing” at the Canteen by Marco Pierre White to Atlantic Hotel in Jersey and now to the beautiful coast of Suffolk and the luxury coastal Brudenell Hotel.
Francis believes in good honest food done well and getting the creation right for a sensational dining experience. He says he doesn’t have one favourite dish in particular, but draws inspiration from foods from every corner of the world. For Francis, the food is all about the quality of ingredients whether locally sourced or from far flung countries, and then marrying them together for simple yet provocative dishes. His menus are now here to prove it.

March 24th, 2011April, April… the month of events at the Brudenell Hotel in Aldeburgh. We are so excited! The weather has started to pick up and we can finally say goodbye to the cold and windy winter and welcome sunny spring with open arms.
At the Brudenell the April month will be extremely hectic and lively. We will start the month with mother’s day celebrations. No, it is not a myth that we’ll offer mouth-watering 3-course menu so that you can treat your mum whilst enjoying the glamorous sea views and the cosy pebble beach. And, the best of all - special mums will receive a little gift with their lunch…
April will continue with our wonderful one year’s anniversary! Yes, indeed – we agree, the time goes by so quickly and we would like you guys to come and celebrate together with us! So why not open a few bottles of champagne together!
As we are all aware Easter is just around the corner so why not spend your Easter break on the beautiful coast of Suffolk. Have your morning coffee and pain au chocolat on our sunny terrace and create your special Easter extravaganza. And, lastly Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding! The event of the year! We are convinced that Great Britain will be buzzing with excitement on the day of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding at Westminster Abbey so we have made sure that you can watch the wedding in style. Why not join us to watch the ceremony…
Also, don’t forget our classics… fishy Thursdays and jazzy Sunday lunch!
That’s all folks… Remember to watch this space for exclusive information and events.
